Stan Fisher, Ted Kowalsky, Phil Leavitt e Bill Reed sono quattro studenti bianchi dell’Università di Toronto, Canada, quando nel 1953 danno forma a questo gruppo per cantare musica pop, canti `barbershop’ e spirituals. Nel 1954 David Somerville rimpiazza Fisher e nasce il nome d’arte Diamonds, già usato da una formazione R&B originaria di New York attiva fra il 1952 ed il 1955 su Atlantic. Nell’estate del 1955 il gruppo inizia ad esibirsi negli Stati Uniti e pubblica su Coral una cover di Black Denim Trousers And Motorcycle Boots dei Cheers, che non ha alcun riscontro di vendite.
Tramite Bill Randall, disc jockey di Cleveland, e incoraggiati dal successo dei conterranei Crew Cuts, passano all’etichetta di questi ultimi, la Mercury. Qui iniziano ad incidere covers di successi doo-wop di gruppi di colore, Why Do Fools Fall In Love di Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, Church Bells May Ring dei Willows, Love Love Love dei Clovers e Ka-Ding Dong dei G-Clefs, che li portano a salire nella classifica pop ma, grazie anche al loro sound, anche in quella Rhythm and blues.
Nella primavera del 1957 la loro versione di Little Darlin’, ripresa dal repertorio dei Gladiolas, sale al n.2 delle classifiche Pop e R&B, restandovi per otto settimane nella prima e due nella seconda. Stazionando nelle classifiche USA per oltre sei mesi, salendo al n.3 della hit parade inglese e vendendo oltre 4 milioni di copie, il brano diventa un classico che introduce di prepotenza il gruppo nella storia del rock.
Il 1957 vede ulteriori presenze in classifica con covers di Words Of Love, Zip Zip, Silhouettes ed il brano originale The Stroll, n.4 Pop all’inizio del 1958. Nel corso dell’anno Leavitt abbandona ed è rimpiazzato da Mike Douglas mentre nel 1959 i californiani Evan Fisher e John Felton sostituiscono Reed e Kowalsky.
Con una consistente produzione ma poche presenze in classifica, il gruppo rimane attivo fino al 1962, quando Somerville lascia per iniziare una carriera da solista col nome David Troy.
Nel 1974 la formazione riprende ad esibirsi nei concerti revivalistici, restando saltuariamente attiva fino agli anni ’90.
