Con alle spalle una buona esperienza di musicista in orchestre jazz, Freddie Bell (F. Bello) nel 1953 dà corpo ad una propria formazione con Frankie Brent (F. Gambino Jr.), Jack Kane, Russ Conti, Chick Keeney e Jerry Mayo.
Ben presto il gruppo modella il proprio sound su quello di Bill Haley And His Comets e nel 1955 pubblica su etichetta Teen il primo singolo con una versione di Hound Dog. Nel 1956 passano alla Mercury e alla consociata Wing, registrando buoni titoli quali Ding Dong (Giddy Up A Ding Dong), Hucklebuck e Rockin’ Is My Business.
Sempre nel 1956 appaiono nel primo film di R&R, Rock Around The Clock e nel film Rumble On The Docks. Malgrado un buon successo di pubblico, anche attraverso le frequenti esibizioni a Las Vegas, negli USA non hanno risultati di classifica mentre, al contrario, in Inghilterra Giddy Up A Ding Dong sale al n.4 nell’autunno del 1956.
Dopo un unico LP su Mercury nel 1958 ed un singolo su Audicon nel 1959 il gruppo di Freddie Bell & The Bellboys scompare dalle scene discografiche, pur restando attivo nelle esibizioni live, come dimostra il secondo ed ultimo album The Bells Are Swinging, registrato all’Hotel Sahara di Las Vegas nel 1964 con i Bellboys in formazione rimaneggiata.
