Jack Leroy Wilson nasce a Detroit, Michigan, il 9 giugno 1934. Verso la fine degli anni ’40, mentre ancora frequenta la scuola superiore, si occupa attivamente di boxe, giungendo anche a vincere un `Golden Glove’ nei pesi welter non professionali. Par accontentare la madre abbandona questa pericolosa attività e si avvicina alla musica professionale, unendosi dapprima agli Ever Ready Gospel Singers e poi al quartetto R&B The Trillers (del quale fa parte anche Hank Ballard).
Nel 1951 viene notato da Johnny Otis, talent scout e direttore d’orchestra, il quale lo indirizza a Billy Ward, leader dei Dominoes. Qualche tempo dopo Wilson diventa vocalist di questa formazione mentre nel contempo realizza le sue prime incisioni pubblicando a nome Sonny Wilson, che già aveva usato ai tempi della boxe, un singolo con Danny Boy e Rainy Day Blues su Dee Gee, etichetta di proprietà del jazzista Dizzy Gillespie.
Nel 1953 diventa il cantante solista dei Dominoes in sostituzione di Clyde McPhatter, che lascia il gruppo per dissidi con Billy Ward. Per circa quattro anni Wilson è presente nelle incisioni dei Dominoes, alcune delle quali appaiono in classifica, You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down (Federal 1953, n.8 R&B), Rags To Riches (King 1954, n.2 R&B) e St.Therese Of The Roses (Decca 1956, n.13 Pop).
Le incredibili qualità canore di Wilson e la spericolata presenza scenica che sviluppa in questo periodo (particolarmente apprezzata anche da Elvis Presley e che sarà di guida a James Brown) fanno sì che il cantante, sentendosi `soffocato’ dal gruppo e non contento della guida di Ward, abbandoni per mettersi in proprio.
Nell’autunno del 1957 il `nuovo’ Jackie Wilson pubblica il suo primo singolo su Brunswick, con Reet Petite e By The Light Of The Silvery Moon. Arriva solo al n.62 della classifica pop, ma è il primo di una lunga serie di oltre 50 presenze nei Top 100 americani che il cantante realizza fino ai primi anni ’70, contando svariati ottimi successi quali, To Be Loved (1958, n.7 R&B), Lonely Teardrops (1958, n.1 R&B, n.7 Pop e primo million seller), That’s Why (1959, n.2 R&B), I’ll Be Satisfied (1959, n.6 R&B), You Better Know It (1959, n.1 R&B), Talk That Talk (1960, n.3 R&B), Doggin’ Around (1960, n.1 R&B), Night (1960, n.3 R&B, n.4 Pop e secondo million seller), A woman A Lover A Friend (1960, n.1 R&B), Alone At Last (1960, n.8 Pop), My Empty Arms (1961, n.9 Pop), I’m Comin’ On Back To You (1961, n.9 R&B), Baby Workout (1963, n.1 R&B e n.5 Pop), Whispers (1966, n.5 R&B), Higher And Higher (1967, n.1 R&B, n.6 Pop e terzo million seller), This Love Is Real (1970, n.9 R&B).
Se l’inizio della carriera solistica lo vede alle prese con titoli rhythm’n’blues dovuti anche alle penne di Tyran Carlo (pseudonimo del cugino di Wilson, Billy Davis) e di un certo Berry Gordy Jr., poi fondatore della Motown, il successivo avvicinamento ad un sound più pop porta spesso Wilson ad affrontare anche particolari canzoni adattate da composizioni di autori classici quali Camille Saint-Saens (Night), Petr Cajkovskij (Alone At Last) e Ruggero Leoncavallo (My Empty Arms). A ciò va poi aggiunta la presenza di sempre più ampi e pesanti arrangiamenti orchestrali che forse gli alienano parte del pubblico di colore ma che in compenso gli procurano un sempre più vasto pubblico bianco.
Gli ultimi anni ’60 e i primi ’70 vedono per `Mr. Excitement’, come è anche conosciuto per la sua esuberanza scenica, un progressivo calo di popolarità al quale non sono estranei guai familiari e col fisco americano e altri pesanti problemi collegati all’uso di alcol e droghe.
Ma una ripresa sembra poter essere l’inserimento nel circuito degli spettacoli di ‘oldies’ e così il 29 settembre 1975 Wilson è al Latin Casino di Cherry Hill, New Jersey, dove si esibisce nell’ambito dello spettacolo Good Ol’ Rock’n’Roll organizzato da Dick Clark.
Sta cantando Lonely Teardrops quando, colpito da infarto, cade pesantemente a terra battendo violentemente la testa. Wilson rimane in coma per circa quattro mesi ma quando ritorna cosciente i gravi danni subiti dal cervello non gli permettono di recuperare nessuna funzione del corpo. Resterà in cura intensiva in ospedale per anni e poco dopo aver iniziato a recuperare parzialmente l’uso della parola lo sfortunato cantante muore il 21 gennaio 1984 a Mount Holly, New Jersey.
Alla fine del 1986 l’artista torna al successo con Reet Petite, riedita in Inghilterra con l’accompagnamento di un originale video a ‘pupazzi animati’, che si attesta al n.1 GB per quattro settimane e vende oltre 700 mila copie.
