E’ nuovamente tempo di premiazioni in Australia. Come ogni anno si è infatti tenuta a Tamworth, una specie di ‘Nashville’ del Nuovo Galles del Sud, la serata dei Country Music Awards, la speciale manifestazione giunta quest’anno alla sua ventìsettesima edizione, che assegna le Golden Guitars (ossia gli Oscar della ‘Aussie’ country music) ai migliori artisti australiani suddivisi in 12 categorie.
Davanti ad un numeroso pubblico in delirio, sono sfilati sul palco del Tamworth Regional Entertainment Center ì nomi più famosi dell’attuale scena country ‘Down Under’.
L’edizione 1999, trasmessa in diretta da Country Music Television Australia con grande gioia della Toyota, sponsor ufficiale della manifestazione, ha avuto fondamentalmente due vincitori che hanno fatto man bassa di premi.
Il primo mattatore della serata è stato indubbiamente Lee Kernaghan che con l’album Hat Town (ABC/ EMI Records), ha vinto cinque ‘Golden Guitars’, portando così il suo score personale a ben 16 ‘Golden Guitars’ conquistate in soli sette anni, cioè da quando nel 1992 ha ottenuto il suo primo successo col singolo Boys From The Bush.
Da allora Lee Kernaghan ha pubblicato cinque albums (compreso il natalizio The Christmas Album) ed è diventato l’artista di punta della nuova country music australiana.
Come dicevamo grazie ai brani di Hat Town, prodotto da Garth Porter, Lee Kernaghan è stato il grande protagonista del Toyota Country Music Awards 1999 vincendo nelle seguenti categorie: ‘Male Vocalist Of The Year’ col brano Goodwindi Moon (scritto da James Blundell e cantato in coppia con la super star americana Trisha Yearwood), ‘Heritage Song of The Year’ grazie a Changi Banjo e ‘Vocal Collaboration Of The Year’ per la collaborazione con Colin Buchanan a Tough Job, brano incluso nell’album The Edge Of Kimberley registrato da Colin per la Warner.
Hat Town è stato inoltre nominato ‘Album Of The Year’ e ‘Top Selling Album Of The Year’ aggiudicandosi così, tra una marea di applausi, anche i premi più ambiti. Un successo senza precedenti per Lee Kemgahn che nonostante la giovane età (classe 1964) ha contribuito in maniera determinante alla crescita della country music australiana.
L’altro dominatore della serata è stato Adam Brand che col suo debut album Adam Brand (Rondor/Peer Music) si presentava a Tamworth forte di ben quattro nominations. Se il titolo di ‘Male Vocalist Of The Year’ gli è stato soffiato proprio da Lee Kernaghan sul filo di lana, Brand, che è di origine italiana, si è ugualmente consolato imponendosi come ‘New Talent Of The Year’.
A sorpresa sono poi arrivate per Brand altre due ‘Golden Guitars’ nelle categorie: ‘Video Clip Of The Year’ col brano Last Man Standing scritto da Chris Watson e ‘Song Of The Year’, sempre grazie a Last Man Standing.
Anche per l’assegnazione della ‘Golden Guitar’ come ‘Female Vocalist Of The Year’ vi era un’attesa quasi febbrile. Cinque le concorrenti in lizza: Carol Young con True Blue Fool, Gina Jeffreys con Dancin’ With Elvis, Sherrie Austin con Good Lovin Comin’ On, Beccy Cole con Somebody Like You e Vanya con Love Is Like A Pillow.
Alla fine il premio è andato a Gina Jeffreys che col brano Dancin’ with Elvis, tratto dal double-platinum Somebody’s Daughter (ABC/EMI Records) ha sbaragliato le agguerritissime concorrenti.
Concludono infine l’elenco dei vincitori The Dead Ringer Band che, con la simpatica Saddle Boy, si sono imposti come ‘Vocal Group Or Duo Of The Year’; Colin Buchanan come ‘Bush Ballad Of The Year’ con That Old Caravan (sempre tratto da The Edge Of Kimberley) ed infine Michael Fix, l’unico artista ad incidere per una etichetta indipendente (la piccola Stallion Records), che ha ottenuto la ‘Golden Guitar’ come ‘Instrumental of The Year’ col brano Mr. Wonglepong.
Tutto sommato anche quest’anno sono stati effettivamente premiati i migliori, quegli artisti cioè che, oltre a vendere milioni di copie, incarnano meglio di chiunque altro la voglia di emergere a livello mondiale della country music del ‘Paese Fortunato’ (uno dei tanti soprannomi con cui gli australiani chiamano orgogliosamente la loro terra).
Avremmo comunque visto volentieri fra i vincitori, albums come Every Place To Go (EMI/Australia) di Kedron Taylor o Not So Dusty – A Tribute To Slim Dusty (ABC/EMI), che hanno invece dovuto accontentarsi di ricevere solamente la nominations, oppure artisti come Neville Anderson, John Vaughan o Ernie Constance che non sono stati nemmeno inclusi nella lista dei candidati.
