La nascita dei Platters, il più popolare gruppo vocale degli anni ’50 ruota attorno alla figura dell’avvocato Buck Ram, arrangiatore in numerose orchestre swing negli anni ’40 e poi manager di diversi artisti e gruppi nei ’50.
Nel 1953 a Los Angeles Tony Williams, originario del New Jersey, ha già un suo gruppo denominato Platters, e con l’intervento della sorella Berta, che già incide col nome di Linda Hayes, entra in contatto con Ram. Dopo alcune prove, del gruppo di Williams rimangono lui stesso e Alex Hodge, ai quali si aggregano i nuovi Herb Reed e David Lynch. Firmato con la Federal registrano diverso materiale inclusa una prima versione di Only You, scritta da Ram, che rimane inedita. Seguono diversi altri singoli rhythm’n’blues che, sebbene vendano bene sulla West Coast, non hanno successo di classifica e verso la fine del 1954, per migliorare il sound, Ram aggiunge al gruppo la voce femminile di Zola Taylor, mentre poi Paul Robi subentra a Hodge.
Nella primavera del 1955 il gruppo dei Penguins, reduce dal successo di Earth Angel, decide di firmare un contratto di management con Buck Ram, il quale subito li porta alla major Mercury di Chicago, con la clausola che quest’ultima deve accettare anche i Platters, al momento ancora poco conosciuti. Durante la prima session il gruppo riregistra Only You che, pubblicato come primo singolo, a luglio li proietta in cima alle classifiche, n.1 R&B per sette settimane e n.5 Pop, diventando un million seller.
Con questo successo, la Mercury inizia a promuovere la formazione dei Platters come se fosse un gruppo bianco pop. A dicembre la seconda uscita The Great Pretender è n.1 R&B per undici settimane e n.1 Pop per due. Mentre la Federal inizia a ripubblicare le incisioni in suo possesso, nel 1956 nuovi hit sono (You’ve Got) The Magic Touch (n.4 R&B e Pop), My Prayer (n.1 R&B e Pop) e You’ll Never Know (n.9 R&B e n.11 Pop). Successi che ben presto portano il gruppo a riscuotere grande popolarità in tutto il mondo.
Fra il 1957 e il 1960 fra la numerosa produzione spiccano titoli quali My Dream (n.7 R&B, 1957), Twilight Time (n.1 R&B e Pop, 1958), Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (n.1 Pop e n.3 R&B, 1958), Enchanted (n.9 R&B e n.12 Pop, 1959) e Harbour Lights (n.8 Pop e n.15 R&B, 1960).
All’inizio del 1961 Tony Williams lascia per una carriera da solista su Reprise e viene sostituito da Sonny Turner; l’anno successivo anche Robi e Zola Taylor lasciano e vengono sostituiti da Nate Nelson e Sandra Dawn. Problemi fra la Mercury e Buck Ram fanno sì che il gruppo non ottenga più il favore della hit parade e sarà solo nel 1966 che, passati alla Musicor, otterranno un buon risultato con I Love You 1000 Times (n.6 R&B).
Negli anni ’70 l’eredità musicale del gruppo si frammenta quando svariati componenti delle formazioni classiche mettono in piedi un proprio gruppo dei Platters, anche con varianti nel marchio; uno con Herb Reed, Nate Nelson, un altro con Paul Robi, David Lynch e Zola Taylor e un altro ancora con Tony Williams e sua moglie Helen. Anche Buck Ram ha il suo, con elementi tutti nuovi, così come Sonny Turner.
