A complemento di una sostanziosa biografia pubblicata nel numero 27 di Jamboree (Febbraio/ Marzo 2001) ecco un altrettanto corposa discografia degli album della piccola (altezza 1 metro e 53 cm.) ma ‘straripante’ bomba sexy della musica country, corredata da brevi riferimenti storici per meglio comprenderne i periodi della carriera.

Nata il 19 gennaio 1946 nei pressi di Sevierville, Tennessee, quarta in una famiglia con dodici fratelli e sorelle, Dolly Rebecca Parton canta e scrive canzoni sin da bambina e a dieci anni inizia ad esibirsi in una stazione radio di Knoxville. Nel 1959 pubblica il suo primo disco, sulla piccola etichetta Goldband di Lake Charles, Louisiana. I due brani, da lei composti, vengono poi riediti in un album del 1979 che comprende diversi altri artisti dell’etichetta.

Nel 1960 con l’aiuto dello zio Bill Owens, anch’egli musicista, e con l’intervento del cantante cajun Jimmy C. Newman riesce ad esibirsi al Grand Ole Opry di Nashville. All’incirca del 1962 sono diverse registrazioni effettuate presso delle stazioni radio che poi appariranno una decina d’anni dopo sull’etichetta economica Alsbire, ma sempre del 1962 è un secondo singolo, comunque senza seguito, sulla major Mercury.

Nel giugno 1964, il giorno dopo aver ottenuto il diploma di scuola media, Dolly parte per Nashville per tentare la fortuna. Firmato un contratto come autore con la casa editrice musicale Combine, alcune sue composizioni vengono portate nella classifica country da altri artisti quali Bill Phillips e Skeeter Davis e ciò apre a Dolly la strada di un contratto con l’etichetta Monument. Qui, fra il paio di dozzine di canzoni che registra, Dumb Blonde e Something Fishy hanno un buon riscontro di classifica ed attirano su di lei l’attenzione della country star Porter Wagoner.

Con alle spalle già 12 anni di luminosa carriera, nel 1967 Porter Wagoner si trova senza la cantante femminile del suo ‘Show’, Norma Jean, e in sua sostituzione assume Dolly. L’appartenenza al Porter Wagoner Show segna il vero lancio della carriera di Dolly la quale, sempre per la RCA Victor, inizia a registrare anche come solista. La produzione discografica è intensa e vede una media annua di 3 o 4 album, oltre a quelli realizzati con Wagoner. Fra i migliori singoli, con sue composizioni autobiografiche, figurano Joshua (N.1 C&W nel 1970), Coat Of Many Colors (N.4 C&W nel 1971), Jolene (N.1 C&W nel 1974), I Will Always Love You (N.1 C&W nel 1974) e The Bargain Store (N.1 C&W 1975). Nella seconda metà dei ’70 la sua popolarità si attesta sempre più frequentemente anche in campo pop con le diverse apparizioni in questa classifica, Here You Come Again (N.3 pop nel 1977) e poi Heartbreaker e Baby I’m Burnin’, rispettivamente n.37 e 25 pop nel 1978.

L’attività cinematografica prosegue con buone realizzazioni quali Il Più Bel Casino Del Texas (1982), Nick Lo Scatenato (1984) e Fiori D’acciaio (1986), mentre il suo repertorio comprende sempre più brani pop, rock e anche disco, come aveva iniziato a fare fin dal 1979, con una eccellente versione del classico Great Balls Of Fire di Jerry Lee Lewis. Nuovi successi sono i due duetti con Kenny Rogers, Islands In The Stream (N.1 C&W e pop nel 1983) e Real Love (N.1 C&W nel 1985), e poi ancora Think About Love (N.1 C&W nel 1986).

A parte diverse colonne sonore, di rilievo è il ‘Trio‘ che Dolly forma nel 1987 con Linda Ronstadt ed Emmylou Harris. Dall’omonimo album scaturisce una eccellente versione del vecchio To Know Him Is To Love Him di Phil Spector (N.1 C&W nel 1987) mentre dodici anni dopo il Trio realizza un secondo album su Asylum. Lasciata la Columbia Dolly continua a registrare per diverse etichette realizzando anche, per la Sugar Hill, la cosiddetta ‘trilogia bluegrass’ e, nel 2003, un ottimo album di brani religiosi e patriottici.
